And The Morning and the Evening were the first day.

Despite some bad weather on the east coast delaying more than a few flights, plenty of DSNA conference attendees were in Hyde Park on Wednesday to register, to take in the sights, and to attend the opening reception at the Oriental Institute.

Quite a few attendees also toured the nearby Robie House. Even the board meeting broke up in time for the board to go on the tour, as well.

Many thanks, already, to our incredibly efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable first-day volunteers, Rozenn, Kathleen, Jane, and Diana, and to the Oriental Institute for having us as their guests!

Also, if anyone is blogging this conference (besides me), if you can use the tag "dsna2007" for your posts and images, we'll be able to find them all later for the newsletter, etc.

The Banquet

The DSNA banquet will be held Saturday night; there are some conflicting times on various schedules (which is completely MY FAULT), but the final time is the reception beginning at 6, dinner at 7.

The silent auction will take place during the reception. So get your bids in fast!

The Quadrangle Club, the site of our banquet, is at 1155 E. 57th Street Chicago, IL 60637. We have a VERY FEW banquet tickets left; please email me if you would like one.

The menu is either roast loin of pork, baked fish, or a vegetarian option. There will be a card in your registration packet for you to indicate your choice. There will be a cash bar during the reception, but wine will be included with dinner.

Robie House Tour

We have at least ten spaces left for the Robie House tour, so email me if you can make it!

Details: 3:45 at Robie House, corner of 58th St. and Woodlawn.

It'll last about an hour, leaving you plenty of time to check out the nearby Seminary Co-op Bookstore before the reception.

For those staying at the Ramada: a good-morning shuttle

Because the hotel is such a distance from the Oriental Institute, we've arranged for a shuttle to pick up attendees at the hotel each morning at 8 a.m. (so you can be in plenty of time for the first session and get a cup of coffee).

This service will be in place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning. Look for the Omega Shuttle van out front.

Return service is not provided, although the hotel offers a shuttle service, picking up at 58th and Ellis Avenue, at 1:10, 3:10, and 5:10 p.m.

A taxi between the Ramada and the OI should be $6-7, plus tip.

Here is one link to walking directions (and here's another); it's about two miles and about 40 minutes to walk from the Ramada to the Oriental Institute. The first link gives directions to walk along the lakefront; walking through Hyde Park is quicker, and it's clear from the second map what route to take.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Getting to Hyde Park (the Dorms & the Ramada)

Probably the best way to get to Hyde Park from either airport is the Omega Shuttle. Omega shuttle fares are $17 from Midway, and $30 from O'Hare (a cab from O'Hare will be >$50, Midway >$20). There is a discount for two or more passengers to the same stop, but you should ask for it.

Here is the O'Hare schedule and boarding locations; this is the Midway schedule.

Omega Shuttle drops off in front of the Quadrangle Club, which is one block from the Max Palevsky dorm (walk west 1/2 block, then turn right immediately before the library (huge structure of concrete, can't miss it), and walk alongside the library. You'll pass a large purple entrance to the dorm, but please go to 56th Street to go in the main entrance, bright yellow with a big ramp (again ... missing it not easy). Check-in will be there.

The Omega shuttle will also stop at the Ramada.

NOTE: if you are returning to Midway from Hyde Park, you should call Omega (773-734-6688) 24 hours in advance to reserve your return trip.

You *can* take public transport from either airport to Hyde Park (it's easier from Midway). Use this trip planner to do so. Note: it will take a loooong time (several hours) to get to Hyde Park from O'Hare via CTA.

The address of Max Palevsky (if you're taking a cab) is 1101 East 56th Street Chicago, IL 60637.

The address of the Ramada Lake Shore is 4900 S Lakeshore Drive Chicago, IL, 60615.

We will only be exhibiting one volume each of the multivolume sets. All the sets are ex-lib (DICTIONARY DEPARTMENT marking on spines) but in good condition (The American Dictionary and Cyclopedia being an exception -- it's missing covers and is in sad disrepair).

If you have questions about individual volumes, please leave them in the comments, or email. I'll answer as soon as I can.

If you cannot attend the banquet but wish to bid, find yourself a proxy.

All proceeds will benefit the DSNA.
